Frequently asked questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms is divided by the square of height in meters. For example, someone weighing 70 kg at 175 cm tall has a BMI of 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) ≈ 22.9.
What are the BMI categories?
Below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese, according to the World Health Organization classification.
Does BMI apply to everyone?
BMI suits most adults, but it does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it may be less accurate for athletes, older adults and pregnant women.
How is the ideal weight range calculated?
The table shows the weight range that corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for your height — the lower and upper bounds of a healthy weight.
